PRINCLING can resume his progress after a break and looks well suited by the return to a straight mile. William Haggas’ three year old ran with considerable credit in two valuable handicaps earlier this season, finishing fourth at Carlisle before being beaten just two and a half lengths over 1m2f at Royal Ascot from a mark of 91. He disappointed when favourite at Newmarket subsequently, but has been gelded during his 84 day absence and now returns in calmer waters. The drop back to 1m should suit and his mark has eased to 90, while he receives 3lbs from the older horses under the race conditions. With Tom Marquand retaining the ride, he can get back on track.

SOLDIER IN MAYO was a non runner when we tipped him at Southwell yesterday but gets another opportunity to build on his highly encouraging chase debut. Donald McCain’s six year old returned from a 16 month absence to finish five lengths second over this trip at Bangor and the form has been significantly boosted by the winner subsequently completing a four timer. Soldier In Mayo remains on the same mark of 94 and should be sharper for that first outing in 475 days, while his previous point to point success provides further encouragement over fences. This represents just his seventh start under rules and with plenty of scope for further improvement, he looks capable of going one better.

BADRI continues to perform at a high level despite his advancing years and looks overpriced in this competitive sprint. Michael Herrington’s nine year old produced a career best effort when beaten just a neck by Toca Madera in a Beverley conditions race last week, despite meeting that rival on unfavourable terms and had previously finished a close third in Listed company and second in a Class 2 handicap. Four victories earlier this season came on good or good to firm ground, while he is also a previous Ascot winner. His mark of 99 demands another big effort, but his recent form suggests he remains capable of it and at a big price, he makes plenty of each way appeal.
