    Soldier In Mayo 7/4

    Theo Gillard/Donald McCain

    Live price from 7Bet

SOLDIER IN MAYO made an encouraging start over fences at Bangor last month and looks capable of going one better with that experience behind him. Donald McCain’s six-year-old returned from a 16-month absence to finish five lengths second over this trip on good ground, with subsequent results giving the form a boost as the winner has scored again since. That was only his sixth start under rules and there should be more to come from a gelding who had previously won a point-to-point and a handicap hurdle. He competes from the same mark of 94 and with conditions again in his favour, can confirm himself a well-handicapped chaser in the making.

    Vulcanist 10/3

    Hector Crouch/Ralph Beckett

    Live price from Paddy Power

VULCANIST makes plenty of appeal on debut in a novice where those with experience have hardly set an insurmountable standard. Ralph Beckett’s colt is by Too Darn Hot and boasts an excellent pedigree, being a sibling to seven winners headed by Group 1 heroine Arabian Queen, who was successful from 5f to 1m2f. His dam was also a high-class performer who won up to 1m4f, so this 7f starting point should provide a suitable blend of speed and stamina. Kamaal and Moon Rock bring useful form to the table, but Vulcanist represents a powerful yard and could be capable of making an immediate impact under Hector Crouch.

    West Byfleet 18/1

    Rob Hornby/Jack Channon

    Live price from Bet365

WEST BYFLEET could be worth chancing at a double-figure price on his handicap debut in a race dominated by a strong favourite but looking wide open beyond that. Jack Channon’s three-year-old showed his potential when beaten just three-quarters of a length at Goodwood in May and an opening mark of 74 looks workable if he can reproduce that level of form. His two subsequent efforts were less convincing, but he has been gelded during an 87-day break and remains unexposed after just four starts. Kaindy is clearly the one to beat, but with three places available for each-way purposes, West Byfleet has scope to improve and looks an interesting alternative.
