About Balloon Race

Balloon Race is a live casino game show from Evolution that takes a rather unusual route to its main event. Instead of placing a bet on a wheel and immediately watching a presenter determine the result, you begin by playing a small 5x3 slot with 10 fixed paylines, qualify for a Top-Up phase and eventually join a live balloon race where coloured balls determine which balloon reaches the finish first.

It's essentially three different casino concepts stitched together. There's a slot at the beginning, a multiplier-building game in the middle and a live lottery-style race at the end. On paper that sounds like somebody couldn't decide which game to make and simply made all three, but the different stages actually fit together remarkably well.

The Qualification phase uses familiar slot mechanics including Scatters and Expanding Wilds, with multipliers potentially collected before you reach the live game. Qualifying then opens an optional Top-Up stage where additional multipliers can be added to the four coloured balloons before the final race begins.

The live finale features red, purple, green and yellow balloons, with a physical ball machine containing 80 correspondingly coloured balls. Each ball drawn moves its matching balloon upwards, with the first colour to reach the finish determining the winning multiplier.

It's a clever structure because the live element feels like something you're actually working towards rather than simply being the default presentation. Most casino game shows put the presenter front and centre from the first second; Balloon Race makes you earn your ticket into the studio first.

Apparently even virtual hot-air balloons have a boarding procedure.

How to Play

Qualification Phase

Every journey begins with the Qualification phase, played on a five-reel, three-row slot with 10 fixed paylines. There are regular paying symbols alongside a Scatter and Expanding Wild, with the aim of landing the combinations required to qualify for the Balloon Race.

Regular symbol combinations can provide wins along the way, but the important symbols are the Scatters and Expanding Wilds. Three Scatters or three Expanding Wilds can qualify you for the later stages, while Scatters can also carry multipliers that remain relevant once you reach the final race.

The Expanding Wild behaves much as you'd expect from a slot, covering its reel and substituting for regular symbols while also contributing towards qualification. It means the opening phase isn't simply an elaborate loading screen before the live game; you're playing a functional little slot with its own wins while trying to unlock the main attraction.

I actually like having to qualify. It creates a sense of progression that most game shows don't have, because reaching the live section feels more significant after you've spent several spins trying to get there.

The obvious downside is that sometimes you just want to watch some balloons race and the game makes you sit an entrance exam first.

XXXtreme & Super XXXtreme Spins

Players who want to increase their chances of reaching the later stages can choose alternative spin modes rather than relying entirely on standard spins.

XXXtreme Spin costs 5x the standard stake, while Super XXXtreme Spin costs 50x. These modes enhance the appearance of the important Wild and Scatter symbols, giving you a much more aggressive route towards qualification.

I like having the choice because it lets you decide whether to approach Balloon Race as a conventional slot or concentrate much more heavily on reaching the live feature. The 50x Super XXXtreme option is obviously a substantial jump in cost, though, and shouldn't be mistaken for some friendly shortcut Evolution has provided because it knows you're in a hurry.

First class costs more on Balloon Race too.

Features

Expanding Wild

The Expanding Wild plays two roles during Qualification. It substitutes for the game's regular paying symbols and can expand across its entire reel, potentially helping create winning combinations.

More importantly, collecting the required Expanding Wilds can qualify you for the Balloon Race itself. That gives the symbol considerably more importance than a conventional slot Wild because seeing one isn't simply about improving the immediate spin; it can move you closer to the part of the game you're really trying to reach.

It's a sensible way of integrating a familiar slot mechanic into the larger game-show structure rather than using a completely arbitrary qualification meter.

Multiplier Scatters

Scatter symbols are another route into the later stages, but they can also arrive carrying multipliers that are taken forward into the Balloon Race.

That's an important distinction because qualification isn't necessarily the only objective during the opening stage. Reaching the race with useful multipliers already attached gives you a considerably stronger starting position than simply scraping through empty-handed.

I like the fact Balloon Race starts building the potential prize before the live game begins. The Qualification phase, Top-Up and final race aren't completely separate games; what happens early in the journey can still matter when you eventually reach the finish.

Top-Up

Once you've qualified, you're given the option of entering the Top-Up phase, where four coloured balloons — red, purple, green and yellow — begin climbing towards multiplier targets.

The balloons can pop before reaching their target, but those that successfully make it to the multiplier line add their respective values to the potential outcome of the final Balloon Race.

It's essentially an additional risk-and-reward stage between qualification and the live event. You've already secured access to the race, but Top-Up gives you an opportunity to improve what that race could eventually be worth.

I particularly like the visual simplicity. You don't need another set of complicated rules after qualifying; you watch four balloons rise and hope they survive long enough to reach something useful.

It's probably the only casino feature where watching a balloon not explode counts as a successful result.

Bonus Multipliers

Before the final race begins, additional multipliers can be introduced to the coloured balloons, further changing what each potential winner could be worth.

This is important because you're not simply watching four identical colours race for a fixed prize. The multipliers accumulated during Qualification and Top-Up give each balloon a different potential value, so the colour you're hoping to see reach the finish can become increasingly important as the feature develops.

It also means the earlier stages haven't been forgotten once the live presenter appears. Everything has been building towards this point, which gives Balloon Race much better continuity than a game where the bonus completely discards whatever happened before it.

Live Balloon Race

The Live Balloon Race is the main event and the point where the game finally becomes a fully live casino game show.

A physical drawing machine contains 80 balls — 20 red, 20 purple, 20 green and 20 yellow. As the live presenter draws each ball, the corresponding coloured balloon moves upwards by one position. The first balloon to make five advances reaches the finish and wins the race.

It's an extremely simple idea, but it creates surprisingly good tension. If your balloon gets an early lead, every matching colour coming out of the machine suddenly matters, while a rival can quickly catch up after several favourable draws.

More importantly, you can physically watch the race develop rather than waiting for a single random result. There's a leader, somebody falling behind and the possibility of the whole thing changing with the next ball, which makes it feel much more like an actual game show than an animated multiplier reveal.

Once a balloon wins, the multipliers accumulated across the previous stages are used to determine the final payout. The journey from Qualification through Top-Up therefore has a genuine purpose rather than simply being a collection of unrelated features.

Balloon Race has one of the more unusual gameplay structures I've encountered in a live casino game show, and for the most part it works extremely well.

Starting with a slot before eventually progressing into a live race gives the game a genuine sense of journey. The Qualification phase is simple enough to understand immediately, while Scatters, Expanding Wilds and multipliers give you several things to watch beyond the regular symbol wins.

The Top-Up phase then changes the pace before the live race takes over completely. By the time you've reached the presenter and physical ball machine, you've already accumulated multipliers and become invested in what happens next, which makes the finale considerably more meaningful than if you'd simply placed a colour bet seconds earlier.

I particularly like the race itself. Watching individual coloured balls move the four balloons creates natural tension because the result develops gradually, and you can immediately see who's leading and what each subsequent draw needs to do.

There is a downside to this structure. If the live Balloon Race is the part you enjoy most, having to repeatedly qualify can become frustrating. This isn't a conventional game show where you can arrive and immediately participate in every live round, and there will inevitably be occasions where other players are racing while you're still staring at the qualification reels.

That slightly unusual barrier to the main event won't suit everyone, but it also gives Balloon Race much more progression than the average live game.

Balloon Race does an excellent job of making its different stages feel connected rather than throwing several unrelated features into the same game.

The Scatter multipliers begin building potential during Qualification, Top-Up gives you another opportunity to improve the values and the final Balloon Race determines which colour ultimately benefits. Something that happens during the opening slot can therefore still matter several stages later.

That's probably the cleverest aspect of the design.

Top-Up is particularly effective because it's visually simple while introducing another layer of risk before the live game. Watching the balloons climb towards their multiplier lines creates anticipation without requiring another complicated set of rules, while the possibility of a balloon popping prevents the feature from becoming automatic.

The live race is obviously the standout. Drawing coloured balls from a physical machine gives the outcome a genuine live component and the gradual five-step race creates considerably more tension than simply drawing one ball to determine the winner.

I also appreciate that Evolution hasn't tried to add a giant bonus wheel simply because apparently every game show needs one. The entire feature package remains committed to the balloon-racing concept from beginning to end.

My only reservation is that the qualification process can occasionally make the best part of the game feel slightly too distant. When the live race is this entertaining, naturally you want to get there.

Balloon Race is one of Evolution's more imaginative live casino productions, particularly once you reach the final stage.

The game starts in a colourful slot environment before gradually moving upwards into the clouds, eventually arriving at the live race where the presenter hosts proceedings from a hot-air-balloon setting. The progression visually mirrors the gameplay, which helps make the different phases feel like parts of the same journey.

The final race is particularly well presented. The coloured balloons are easy to follow, every ball draw has an obvious effect and the current positions remain clear throughout. That's important because a four-way race could easily become visually messy if the game buried everything beneath unnecessary animations and effects.

The live presenter also has a genuine role here rather than simply standing beside a wheel waiting to spin it. Drawing the coloured balls effectively controls the progress of the race and gives the final stage the feeling of a proper live event. Individual presenters naturally rotate and aren't something I'd include in the permanent numerical rating, but the host-led format itself adds considerably to the experience.

There's also something wonderfully silly about the whole production. Evolution has somehow managed to take a slot machine, a bingo ball machine and four hot-air balloons and convince everyone they're participating in the same activity.

Somehow, they are.

Balloon Race is one of the more original live game-show concepts because Evolution hasn't simply started with a money wheel and worked backwards.

The Qualification slot isn't particularly innovative on its own, nor is drawing coloured balls from a machine. What stands out is the way Evolution connects those familiar ideas into a three-stage game where each part contributes towards the final result.

The slot determines qualification and can provide multipliers, Top-Up gives those multipliers another opportunity to develop and the live race finally decides which balloon wins. There's a clear reason for every stage to exist.

Making the live element something you qualify for is also unusual. Most hybrid casino games use the live studio as the foundation and add digital features around it, whereas Balloon Race essentially reverses that relationship by making the presenter-hosted race the destination.

It isn't going to replace the simplicity of spinning a wheel for players who want instant results, but originality isn't about making everything simpler. Balloon Race takes several familiar mechanics and combines them in a way that feels genuinely different.

Evolution hasn't reinvented slots, bingo or hot-air balloons.

It has just somehow persuaded all three to go on holiday together.

Final Summary

Balloon Race is one of the better examples of what can happen when a developer stops treating "live game show" as another way of saying "very large wheel".

Evolution starts you on a 5x3 slot with 10 paylines, where Scatters and Expanding Wilds provide routes towards qualification and multipliers can begin building before you've even reached the live game. That makes the opening stage more than an obstacle standing between you and the race, although there will inevitably be times when qualification takes longer than you'd like.

The optional Top-Up phase is a clever bridge between the two parts of the game. Watching the four coloured balloons rise towards their multiplier targets gives you another opportunity to improve the potential final result, but the possibility of them popping means those additional values aren't guaranteed.

Everything then comes together during the live Balloon Race. A physical machine contains 80 balls split evenly between red, purple, green and yellow, with every draw moving the corresponding balloon one step higher. The first colour to make five advances wins, so the race develops gradually and gives you plenty of time to become unreasonably emotionally invested in a virtual purple balloon.

The biggest strength is how well those three stages connect. Multipliers earned early can remain relevant later, Top-Up can enhance the potential further and the live race finally determines which colour gets across the line. It feels like one game developing over several phases rather than a slot awkwardly attached to an unrelated live bonus.

The biggest weakness comes from exactly the same structure. Players primarily interested in the live race can't simply participate in every round and may find themselves repeatedly working through Qualification while the part they really want to play remains out of reach. It's a deliberate design decision, but it'll divide opinion.

Published UK operator information lists the standard game at around 96.09% RTP, with the Top-Up phase around 96.05%, although the precise return should always be checked in the in-game information for the version being played.

For me, the originality outweighs the occasional frustration. Balloon Race has progression, a genuinely entertaining live finale and enough continuity between its different phases to justify combining slot and game-show mechanics in the first place.

It takes a while to get airborne, but once Balloon Race finally leaves the ground, it's well worth the flight.

Overall Rating: 8.9/10.
