Atomic Slot Lab dives into the darker reaches of the ocean with Bioluminanza, swapping the usual fishing boats and cartoon fishermen for glowing coral, jellyfish, seahorses and other bioluminescent sea life. Underwater slots aren't exactly uncharted territory, but focusing on what lives much further beneath the surface at least gives this one a different identity.
The action takes place across a 5x5 grid using Cluster Pays, with winning clusters disappearing to make way for new symbols through Cascading Reels. That's only really the starting point, though. Successful cascades can activate the Tide Meter, while Wild symbols involved in wins can unleash one of three Luminous Bonuses. The result is a game where a fairly ordinary looking cluster can occasionally set off a much longer chain of events.
There's quite a lot happening, perhaps a little too much when you first encounter it. The good news is that most features share the same purpose: keeping cascades alive, improving what's already on screen or creating bigger clusters. Once you've seen them in action, the various moving parts make considerably more sense.
Visually, the concept is stronger than the execution. The glowing sea creatures and illuminated coral work nicely against the dark ocean floor, but some of the artwork and animations have a slightly old school feel compared with the slickest modern slots. That's a shame because bioluminescence gives Atomic Slot Lab plenty to play with. The lights are certainly on down there, but they could have shone a little brighter.
Every winning cluster disappears and new symbols fall into the empty spaces, potentially creating another win without requiring a new paid spin. Cascades continue until the newly arranged grid produces no further winning cluster.
Cascades aren't particularly unusual nowadays, but they're fundamental to Bioluminanza because continuing a sequence also powers the Tide Meter. That means there's an extra reason to want another cluster to connect beyond simply collecting another win.
When a Wild forms part of a winning cluster, it can activate one of three Luminous Bonuses: Glow Streak, Symbiotic Bloom or Multiplier Bubbles.
This is where Bioluminanza starts showing more personality. Rather than Wilds simply filling gaps in winning clusters, getting one involved can change what happens next.
Glow Streak locks the winning symbols and Wilds in position while the remaining positions are refreshed with another cascade. Newly arriving winning symbols and Wilds can also become locked, allowing the sequence to continue for as long as suitable symbols keep arriving.
Of the three Luminous Bonuses, this is probably the one that best complements the Cluster Pays format. Instead of wiping out a winning combination, you're effectively trying to grow what you've already got.
Symbiotic Bloom chooses an existing winning cluster and expands it into additional neighbouring positions. It won't overwrite Wilds, Scatters or other winning clusters.
It's not complicated, but that's rather the point. Bigger clusters mean better possibilities, and watching an existing group of symbols suddenly spread across the seabed is one of the more satisfying ways the game modifies the grid.
Multiplier Bubbles place between one and five multipliers worth 2x to 10x onto random grid positions. If multiple bubbles occupy the same position, their values are added together.
They're another good fit for cascading gameplay because the position suddenly matters as much as the symbols themselves. The only problem is getting the bubbles and the useful clusters to meet in the right part of the ocean.
Every cascade advances the Tide Meter by one level. Reach the third cascade during a spin and one of three Tide features is randomly activated: Reef Rise, Tidal Wave or Glow Up. Only one Tide feature can activate during a spin.
I like this mechanic because it gives longer cascade sequences a destination. Once you've reached two consecutive cascades, there's something tangible waiting if the grid can squeeze out just one more.
Reef Rise expands the grid upwards by one, two or three additional rows, potentially taking the playing area from 5x5 to as large as 5x8 for the active cascade sequence.
More space means more opportunities to create sizeable clusters, and it's visually one of the easier Tide features to appreciate, suddenly there's quite literally more game to play with.
Tidal Wave selects one symbol type currently on the grid and washes every instance of it away, creating another cascade.
It's essentially a symbol removal mechanic dressed appropriately for the underwater theme, but removing an inconvenient symbol can open up connections between clusters that were previously separated.
Glow Up transforms lower paying symbols currently on the grid into higher paying symbols.
It's arguably the least inventive of the Tide features, but it still serves a useful purpose and again works with what's already happening on the grid rather than interrupting proceedings with a completely separate mini game.
Landing three Scatter symbols awards 8 Free Spins. During the feature, Wilds that haven't yet activated a Luminous Bonus remain on the grid for the following spin, increasing the opportunity for those modifiers to eventually trigger.
Free Spins can also be extended. Two additional Scatters award another four spins, while three add another eight. The persistent Wild behaviour is the important addition here, as it makes the Luminous Bonuses more prominent and gives the feature a little more continuity from one spin to the next.
Where permitted, the Feature Buy (Bonus Buy) provides direct access to Free Spins for 65x the current stake.
There's nothing especially adventurous about the implementation, it's essentially the express lift to Free Spins rather than another feature in its own right.
Bioluminanza's combination of Cluster Pays and Cascading Reels provides a solid foundation, but it's the Tide Meter that makes the gameplay more interesting. Knowing a third consecutive cascade will trigger another modifier gives longer sequences a sense of progression and makes that next cluster matter.
There can be a lot happening once Wild modifiers, expanding grids and symbol changes start firing, so the game isn't quite as immediately accessible as some cluster slots. Once everything clicks, though, there's a nicely interconnected system underneath all those bubbles.
This is comfortably Bioluminanza's strongest area. Glow Streak, Symbiotic Bloom and Multiplier Bubbles all modify wins differently, while the Tide Meter introduces another three possibilities once a cascade sequence gathers momentum.
What prevents the feature list becoming feature soup is that most of these mechanics interact with the grid rather than dragging you into unrelated bonus games. Free Spins then improve the formula further through persistent Wilds.
Atomic Slot Lab has packed plenty into the ocean without completely sinking the ship.
Bioluminescence is a great idea for a slot theme. Brightly glowing marine life against a dark seabed should be tailor made for an impressive visual experience, and there are moments where Bioluminanza captures that contrast nicely.
However, the execution doesn't always match the concept. The artwork has a somewhat older style and lacks some of the polish, depth and animation found in stronger contemporary releases. Other reviewers have similarly criticised its dated looking presentation, although opinions on the theme itself are mixed.
It's certainly colourful and distinctive; it just feels like Atomic Slot Lab could have made considerably more of such a visually rich idea.
Cluster Pays, Cascades and multipliers aren't new, and neither is sending players beneath the waves. Bioluminanza does deserve credit for how it combines them, though.
The bioluminescent setting is less predictable than another fishing expedition, while the two layer system of Luminous Bonuses and Tide Meter features gives the gameplay its own identity.
There's familiar machinery underneath, but Atomic Slot Lab has rearranged enough of it to produce something that doesn't feel like you've already played the exact same game wearing different clothes.
Overall Rating
8.0/10
Bioluminanza has considerably more going on beneath the surface than its glowing fish initially suggest. The real strength is how Cascades feed the Tide Meter while Wilds can trigger a completely separate set of modifiers, creating plenty of opportunities for one successful cluster to develop into something much more interesting.
The presentation doesn't quite glow as brightly as the concept deserves, but the feature design compensates for some of those visual shortcomings. Atomic Slot Lab has taken several familiar mechanics and combined them intelligently enough to make this particular dive beneath the waves feel different.
