Relax Gaming has clearly decided the world has enough angry Vikings swinging axes around, so Cod of Thunder Dream Drop sends its Scandinavian crew fishing instead. That makes considerably more thematic sense. If you're going to spend your time fishing with Vikings, there should at least be the possibility that one of them hooks something worth €2 million.
Cod of Thunder Dream Drop has a straightforward gameplay loop that works well because its main mechanics complement each other. Cascades drive the Multiplier Ladder, while fish provide a completely separate element to watch during the same sequence.
That gives regular spins more purpose than simply waiting for Free Spins. Dream Drop Fish can also appear in the base game, so the headline jackpot mechanic is active from the beginning rather than being locked away somewhere most sessions may never reach.

The lighter Scandinavian presentation gives Cod of Thunder plenty of character. Instead of the usual dark temples, enormous warriors and lightning filled skies, there's a colourful Viking crew aboard a fishing vessel with the fjords providing the backdrop.
It's polished and easy to follow, particularly when fish and feature symbols start appearing, although it doesn't have the visual ambition of Relax Gaming's most spectacular releases. Independent assessments have similarly described the presentation as clean and characterful while noting that it isn't particularly cinematic.
The comedy Viking approach suits the title, though. Cod of Thunder was never going to be the slot where Relax Gaming suddenly got deadly serious about Norse mythology.
Fishing slots are everywhere, Vikings aren't exactly difficult to find either, and Cascading Reels combined with increasing multipliers certainly won't have anyone checking the calendar to see if the slot machine has just been reinvented.
Combining the two themes at least gives Cod of Thunder an amusing identity, while the Dream Drop Fish are a clever way of connecting Relax Gaming's jackpot network directly to the core collection mechanic.
The underlying ingredients are familiar, but there's enough thought in how they've been assembled to prevent this feeling like another fisherman with a different hat.

Cod of Thunder Dream Drop isn't the most original catch in Relax Gaming's net, but it's a good example of familiar mechanics being put together properly.
Cascades give the Multiplier Ladder somewhere to develop, fish add another target to chase and Free Spins improve both mechanics by preserving multipliers and making catches easier. Dream Drop is also unusually well integrated, with jackpot fish providing access from regular gameplay instead of hiding the biggest prizes behind another feature.
The presentation could have packed a little more thunder, but the gameplay has enough going on beneath the surface to make up for it.
