About Cod of Thunder Dream Drop

Relax Gaming has clearly decided the world has enough angry Vikings swinging axes around, so Cod of Thunder Dream Drop sends its Scandinavian crew fishing instead. The result is a cheerful combination of Norse seafarers, stormy fjords, multiplier carrying fish and Relax Gaming's Dream Drop progressive jackpots. Even the name tells you this one isn't taking its mythology too seriously.

The action takes place on a 5x4 grid, with winning combinations disappearing through Cascading Reels and fresh symbols dropping into the spaces. Every successful cascade also moves you further along a Multiplier Ladder, so one win can potentially develop into a much more interesting sequence if the new symbols keep connecting. Relax Gaming confirms that the ladder can continue increasing as cascades occur.

Fish provide the other major part of the gameplay. These can arrive carrying multiplier values and are randomly caught by the Vikings, adding their values to the win. Some fish are considerably more interesting catches than others because Dream Drop Fish provide direct access to the progressive jackpots from the base game. You don't have to reach Free Spins before getting a shot at the big one.

Free Spins improve the formula by making the Multiplier Ladder persistent and automatically collecting fish when they reach the bottom of the reels. There's also a Full Net feature capable of scooping up every fish currently visible, which is about as close as these Vikings get to deciding they've had enough of fishing properly.

There's nothing particularly revolutionary underneath it all. Cascades, increasing multipliers and collecting fish are very familiar slot mechanics. The clever part is how Relax Gaming has connected them and incorporated Dream Drop into the fishing itself. This is less about reinventing the fishing slot and more about finding a better boat.

Features

Cascades

Winning symbols are removed from the grid and replaced by new ones, giving another winning combination the opportunity to form from the same initial spin. The process can continue for as long as fresh wins keep appearing.

Cascades are particularly important here because they're directly connected to the Multiplier Ladder. Another cascade doesn't simply mean another potential win. It also means another move up the ladder, giving successful sequences a proper sense of momentum.

Multiplier Ladder

Each successful cascade advances the Multiplier Ladder, increasing the multiplier applied as a sequence develops. Independent sources report that the ladder can eventually reach 500x.

It's a simple mechanic, but an effective one. Once a few consecutive wins have landed, you're no longer looking at the next cascade in isolation because you've already built something worth preserving.

The ladder resetting in the base game keeps the biggest sequences difficult to achieve, while its behaviour during Free Spins gives the mechanic considerably more room to breathe.

Multiplier Fish

Special Multiplier Fish can appear carrying values, with Relax Gaming confirming that they're randomly caught when they land on the reels. Individual fish values range as high as 100x the stake.

This provides a second route to making a spin more interesting alongside the Multiplier Ladder. The fish are clearly visible, so there's also that familiar Cash Collect tension of seeing something useful swimming around and hoping one of the Vikings actually bothers to catch it.

Apparently even mythical Scandinavian fishermen can let the good ones get away.

Dream Drop Fish

Some of the fish are Dream Drop Fish, which provide the opportunity to win one of the Dream Drop progressive jackpots directly from the base game.

That's an important distinction because the jackpot isn't hidden behind Free Spins or a separate bonus trigger. Relax Gaming specifically designed Cod of Thunder Dream Drop to bring jackpot opportunities closer to the core gameplay.

It also fits the fishing concept particularly well. Instead of randomly triggering an unrelated jackpot wheel, the really valuable catch can actually arrive among the fish you're already watching.

Free Spins

Free Spins retain the Cascading Reels and Multiplier Ladder but make one particularly important change. The multiplier remains persistent throughout the bonus rather than resetting between individual spins.

Fish also become easier to collect because any that reach the bottom of the reels are automatically caught.

Those two changes make Free Spins substantially more interesting than simply receiving more of the base game for free. Building the multiplier over multiple spins gives the feature genuine progression, while automatic fish collection makes the other half of the game's core mechanic more active at the same time.

Full Net

During Free Spins, the Full Net can randomly activate and collect every fish currently visible on the reels.

It's probably the feature that best suits the theme. Instead of waiting for fish to be individually caught, the net comes down and takes the lot.

Mechanically it's a straightforward Collect All feature, but timing can make it considerably more interesting when several valuable fish have gathered on screen.

Dream Drop

Cod of Thunder Dream Drop connects to six progressive Dream Drop jackpots, including Relax Gaming's Daily Jackpot and the headline Mega, which can reach €2 million. Relax Gaming describes the game as providing access to these jackpots from the base game through Dream Drop Fish.

The integration is what earns points here rather than simply the size of the prize. Dream Drop is connected to the fishing mechanic, meaning jackpot opportunities feel like part of Cod of Thunder rather than something pasted onto an unrelated slot.

That makes considerably more thematic sense. If you're going to spend your time fishing with Vikings, there should at least be the possibility that one of them hooks something worth €2 million.

Our Rating

Gameplay

40%
8.0/10

Cod of Thunder Dream Drop has a straightforward gameplay loop that works well because its main mechanics complement each other. Cascades drive the Multiplier Ladder, while fish provide a completely separate element to watch during the same sequence.

That gives regular spins more purpose than simply waiting for Free Spins. Dream Drop Fish can also appear in the base game, so the headline jackpot mechanic is active from the beginning rather than being locked away somewhere most sessions may never reach.

It isn't especially complicated, but it doesn't need to be. There's enough happening to maintain interest without turning a fishing trip into an instruction manual.

Bonus & Features

30%
8.5/10

The individual mechanics aren't particularly unusual. What Cod of Thunder does well is make them work together.

Cascades increase the multiplier, fish introduce additional values, Free Spins preserve the multiplier, fish become automatically collectable during the bonus and Full Net can scoop up everything on screen. Dream Drop then sits above the whole system without feeling completely detached from it.

Free Spins are particularly well designed because they improve both of the game's central mechanics rather than simply adding an unrelated modifier.

There aren't dozens of features here, but the ones Relax Gaming has included actually have a reason to exist.

Visuals & Presentation

20%
7.5/10

The lighter Scandinavian presentation gives Cod of Thunder plenty of character. Instead of the usual dark temples, enormous warriors and lightning filled skies, there's a colourful Viking crew aboard a fishing vessel with the fjords providing the backdrop.

It's polished and easy to follow, particularly when fish and feature symbols start appearing, although it doesn't have the visual ambition of Relax Gaming's most spectacular releases. Independent assessments have similarly described the presentation as clean and characterful while noting that it isn't particularly cinematic.

The comedy Viking approach suits the title, though. Cod of Thunder was never going to be the slot where Relax Gaming suddenly got deadly serious about Norse mythology.

Originality

10%
7.0/10

Fishing slots are everywhere, Vikings aren't exactly difficult to find either, and Cascading Reels combined with increasing multipliers certainly won't have anyone checking the calendar to see if the slot machine has just been reinvented.

Combining the two themes at least gives Cod of Thunder an amusing identity, while the Dream Drop Fish are a clever way of connecting Relax Gaming's jackpot network directly to the core collection mechanic.

The underlying ingredients are familiar, but there's enough thought in how they've been assembled to prevent this feeling like another fisherman with a different hat.

Final Summary

Cod of Thunder Dream Drop isn't the most original catch in Relax Gaming's net, but it's a good example of familiar mechanics being put together properly.

Cascades give the Multiplier Ladder somewhere to develop, fish add another target to chase and Free Spins improve both mechanics by preserving multipliers and making catches easier. Dream Drop is also unusually well integrated, with jackpot fish providing access from regular gameplay instead of hiding the biggest prizes behind another feature.

The presentation could have packed a little more thunder, but the gameplay has enough going on beneath the surface to make up for it.

Overall Rating: 8.0/10.
