About Football Studio

Football Studio is a live casino card game from Evolution, launched in 2018, which takes one of the simplest card games imaginable and presents it like a football match. There are two sides — Home and Away — and each receives a single card. Whichever side gets the higher card wins, while matching card values produce a Draw.

And that's basically the entire game.

Cards are dealt from an eight-deck shoe without Jokers, with values running from 2 as the lowest through to Ace as the highest. Home and Away both pay 1:1, while correctly predicting a Draw pays 11:1. If a Draw occurs when you've backed Home or Away, half of that main bet is returned rather than the entire stake being lost.

What makes Football Studio more interesting than the rules suggest is the presentation. Evolution has built the studio around the idea of a football broadcast, with the table split into Home and Away sides, football-style graphics and presenters encouraged to talk about real matches while the cards are being dealt.

That football information has absolutely no bearing on which card is about to emerge from the shoe, of course. Manchester City could be 4-0 up while Home receives a three and Away pulls an Ace.

Football knowledge is useful for many things.

Football Studio isn't one of them.

How to Play

Home vs Away

Every round starts with three extremely straightforward betting choices: Home, Away or Draw.

Once betting closes, the presenter deals one card face-up to Home and another to Away. Card values run from 2, 3, 4 and so on through Jack, Queen and King, with Ace the highest.

If Home receives the higher card, Home wins. If Away receives the higher card, Away wins. If both cards have the same rank, the result is a Draw.

There are no additional cards, decisions or complicated hand rankings to remember. Suits don't matter either, so a King of Hearts and King of Clubs simply produce a Draw.

That makes Football Studio one of the easiest live casino games to pick up. You could arrive halfway through a round with absolutely no idea what you're watching and probably understand the entire game before the next two cards have been dealt.

The downside is equally obvious: once you've understood those rules, there isn't another layer waiting underneath them.

Betting Options

Home and Away are the two main bets and both pay 1:1 when successful.

The Draw is the higher-paying alternative at 11:1, winning whenever Home and Away receive cards of the same rank regardless of suit.

Importantly, a Draw doesn't completely wipe out an existing Home or Away wager. If you've placed a main bet and the cards tie, half of that stake is returned.

That's a useful distinction because it's also where the house advantage on the main bets comes from. The optimal theoretical RTP published for Home and Away is 96.27%, whereas the Draw is considerably less favourable at 89.64%.

So while 11:1 understandably looks more exciting on the betting grid, the maths behind it is considerably less attractive.

Apparently even a 0-0 draw can disappoint you twice.

Features

Live Football Updates

Football Studio's most distinctive feature isn't actually part of the card game at all.

The interface incorporates real-world football information, with match results and updates from major competitions displayed alongside the casino action. The presentation was deliberately designed to appeal to football and sportsbook players rather than simply putting football artwork around a traditional card table.

I think that's a clever idea because the card game itself doesn't provide enough material to fill the gaps between rounds. Having genuine football information available gives players something relevant to look at while waiting for the next deal.

It also makes the theme feel more authentic than simply calling the two card positions Home and Away and painting a couple of goalposts on the wall.

Just don't confuse information with strategy. Knowing Arsenal have scored in the 89th minute doesn't make the Home card any more likely to beat Away.

Results & Trends

Previous Football Studio results are displayed through football-inspired scoreboards and roadmaps, allowing you to see recent sequences of Home, Away and Draw outcomes.

It's useful from a presentation perspective because a run of Home or Away victories gives the session a little narrative and makes the game feel more like an ongoing contest rather than a completely disconnected series of two-card deals.

What it doesn't do is predict the next result.

If Away has won six consecutive rounds, the cards haven't suddenly developed a moral obligation to give Home an equaliser. The history is interesting to follow, but each new deal still depends on the cards remaining in the shoe.

Football-Focused Presenters

Normally, we don't rate individual presenters because hosts rotate and the quality of a game shouldn't depend on who happens to be working that particular shift.

With Football Studio, however, the style of presentation is an actual part of the product.

Evolution designed the game around hosts discussing football, reacting to real-world fixtures and presenting the card action more like a sports broadcast than a traditional casino table. That gives the presenter considerably more to talk about than simply announcing "Home wins" every 30 seconds.

When it works, it gives Football Studio a relaxed match-day feel and provides some entertainment between the extremely short card rounds.

Individual presenters will naturally vary, but the football-focused hosting concept itself is one of the game's better ideas.

Without it, we'd essentially be watching someone play high card at a very expensive desk.

Football Studio is about as accessible as live casino gets, although that simplicity inevitably limits how much depth it can offer.

Home, Away or Draw. Two cards are dealt. Highest card wins.

There's practically no learning curve, and rounds move quickly because there are no additional decisions or complicated settlement rules once the cards appear. That makes Football Studio particularly good if you want something fast without having to understand a large betting grid.

I also like the half-stake return on Home and Away bets when a Draw occurs. It gives the main wagers a slightly different structure from simply winning or losing every time the two cards match.

The obvious problem is that there isn't much else to do. Unlike Cash or Crash, there are no decisions after betting; unlike MONOPOLY Live, there's no bonus to chase; and unlike Lightning Dice, there isn't even a multiplier capable of suddenly changing an ordinary result.

You choose a side and two cards appear.

That simplicity is part of Football Studio's appeal, but it's also the reason I wouldn't score the gameplay much higher.

There's no point pretending Football Studio has a huge feature package because it simply doesn't.

There are no traditional bonus rounds, random multipliers or jackpot mechanics in the standard game. Home, Away and Draw are the entire betting proposition.

The football-related additions do improve the overall experience. Live match information, football-focused presenters and the results displays all give the game considerably more character than an ordinary Top Card table, but none of them fundamentally changes the underlying gameplay.

That's why this section scores noticeably lower than most of the game shows we've reviewed. It would be unfair to give Football Studio eight or nine points for Bonuses & Features when a game like Boom City is offering several genuinely different bonus games.

I don't necessarily think Football Studio needs them. Adding a 500x VAR Bonus Wheel and a Super Injury Time multiplier just for the sake of it would probably ruin the simplicity.

But you can't score features that aren't there.

This is where Evolution has managed to turn an incredibly basic card game into something with an identity of its own.

The studio resembles a football broadcast rather than a conventional casino table, with Home and Away clearly represented on either side and match-style graphics surrounding the action. Real-world football updates add another layer to the presentation, particularly if you're playing while matches are actually taking place.

The presenters are also encouraged to discuss football rather than simply dealing cards and announcing results. Evolution described the original game as having hosts working in a sports-commentator style, and that's an important distinction because there isn't much happening mechanically between one two-card deal and the next.

I like that approach. Football Studio knows the underlying game isn't spectacular, so instead of pretending otherwise, Evolution has concentrated on creating an environment football fans might actually enjoy spending time in.

It obviously can't compete visually with something like MONOPOLY Live, Adventures Beyond Wonderland or Balloon Race. There are no huge augmented-reality bonus environments or spectacular transitions.

But for what is essentially high card wearing football boots, it's surprisingly watchable.

The actual card game is about as old-school as it gets, but the way Evolution packaged it was much more original when Football Studio appeared in 2018.

Comparing two cards isn't remotely innovative. The underlying concept is closely related to Top Card and Dragon Tiger, and there's nothing particularly revolutionary about calling one side Home and the other Away.

What deserves credit is the decision to build the entire experience around football spectators rather than traditional casino players.

Real match information, sports-style presenters, Home and Away terminology and football broadcast graphics create an unusual crossover between sportsbook culture and live casino. Evolution's own reporting at the time specifically positioned Football Studio as a football-themed live game rather than simply another card table.

That gives it an identity which the mechanics alone certainly wouldn't provide.

There are plenty of more ambitious game shows now, and Evolution has since expanded the concept with Football Studio Dice, but the original deserves some credit for finding an entertaining home for such a basic game.

It's basically a game of high card that bought a season ticket.

Final Summary

Football Studio is one of the simplest games in Evolution's live portfolio, and whether that's a strength or weakness depends almost entirely on what you're looking for.

The rules can be explained in seconds. Bet on Home, Away or Draw and watch the presenter deal two cards from an eight-deck shoe. The higher card wins, with Home and Away paying 1:1 while matching ranks produce an 11:1 Draw. If you've backed Home or Away and a Draw occurs, half of the main stake is returned.

That's it.

There are no bonus rounds hiding behind certain cards, no random multipliers and no elaborate feature waiting to trigger. Once you've played one round, you understand practically everything Football Studio can do.

What saves it from feeling completely bare is the football presentation. Evolution designed the studio around sports-style hosting and real football information, with presenters discussing fixtures and results while the card game continues. That gives the downtime between deals some purpose and makes the theme feel more substantial than simply renaming Player and Banker as Home and Away.

The maths is worth paying attention to as well. Published Evolution rules put the optimal theoretical RTP at 96.27% for Home and Away, while the Draw returns only 89.64% despite offering the much more eye-catching 11:1 payout. That's a substantial difference and something I'd definitely mention rather than simply presenting all three bets as equivalent choices.

Football Studio's biggest strength and biggest weakness are ultimately the same thing: simplicity. Players wanting multiple bonuses, huge multipliers and elaborate game-show features will find very little here. Those wanting rapid rounds, uncomplicated betting and something they can play while keeping an eye on the football may find that simplicity much more appealing.

It certainly isn't Evolution's most ambitious game.

Then again, football has managed to remain fairly popular for more than a century with only one ball and two goals.

Football Studio takes the same approach: keep the rules simple, pick a side and hope your team gets the result.

Overall Rating: 7.4/10.
