About Sweet Bonanza CandyLand

Sweet Bonanza CandyLand is Pragmatic Play's live game show adaptation of Sweet Bonanza, taking the familiar sweets, fruit and Sugar Bombs from one of its best-known slots and building an entire live casino game around them. Originally released in November 2021, CandyLand replaces the traditional reels with a huge physical money wheel, a live presenter and a collection of digital bonus games.

If you've played Sweet Bonanza before, you'll feel at home immediately. If you haven't, imagine Willy Wonka opening a casino and you're somewhere close.

The basic game is deliberately easy to understand. Players place bets on the available wheel positions before the timer expires, after which the presenter spins the wheel and the segment beneath the pointer determines the result. Regular number positions provide straightforward payouts, while the more interesting sections can activate Sweet Spins, Candy Drop or Bubble Surprise.

There are also three Sugar Bomb positions on the wheel, which award random multipliers before triggering another spin. Consecutive Sugar Bombs can increase the potential considerably, while the optional Sugar Bomb Booster provides another way of enhancing these multipliers.

The game is streamed 24/7 in HD from a purpose-built studio, combining a real wheel and live presenter with virtual environments, animations and completely digital bonus games. Pragmatic Play lists a maximum win of €500,000, so there's considerably more potential hiding behind the innocent-looking candy shop surroundings than first appearances might suggest.

Visually, CandyLand certainly isn't subtle. Pink, purple, sweets and flashing lights are absolutely everywhere, and somebody at Pragmatic Play was apparently shown the saturation slider and told there was a prize for getting it all the way to the right. It could easily have become an unbearable mess, but the Sweet Bonanza theme is distinctive enough to carry it and the physical and virtual elements fit together surprisingly well.

More importantly, there's enough going on underneath all that sugar to make CandyLand considerably more than a Sweet Bonanza-themed money wheel.

How to Play

The CandyLand Wheel

Every round starts with a short betting period where you can place wagers across the available number and bonus positions. Once betting closes, the live presenter spins the wheel and whichever segment eventually stops beneath the pointer determines the outcome.

Land on one of the regular positions you've backed and you're paid according to that result, while hitting one of your selected bonus positions takes you into the corresponding feature. Sugar Bombs work slightly differently, adding a multiplier before sending the wheel around again.

It's an extremely accessible format and you'll understand what's happening after watching a couple of rounds. That's important because most of CandyLand's complexity comes from what happens after the wheel stops rather than from the betting itself, leaving the main game simple enough for the bonuses and multipliers to provide the variety.

Betting Options

The current version provides six main betting positions, consisting of the regular number outcomes alongside Sweet Spins, Candy Drop and Bubble Surprise. Bets can be spread across several outcomes rather than committing everything to one position, although naturally each additional selection increases the total amount being staked on the round.

The regular numbers are essentially the bread and butter of CandyLand. They provide the frequent, straightforward results needed to keep the wheel moving, while the bonus positions offer considerably more interesting possibilities.

And let's be honest, nobody entered a giant virtual sweet shop because they were desperate to see the number two.

Features

Sugar Bomb

The Sugar Bomb is probably the most important feature for making the main wheel itself interesting. Three Sugar Bomb positions appear around the wheel and, when one is hit, a random multiplier of up to 10x is generated before the wheel is spun again.

That multiplier is applied to the result of the following spin, but things become considerably more interesting if another Sugar Bomb appears. A second multiplier is then generated and the values can be multiplied together, rather than simply added, before another spin takes place.

This creates one of CandyLand's better moments of anticipation. Once you've already collected a multiplier, watching the wheel slow down anywhere near another Sugar Bomb suddenly becomes much more exciting than an ordinary spin.

I also like how naturally the mechanic brings one of Sweet Bonanza's most recognisable features into a completely different type of game. Pragmatic Play hasn't tried to recreate the slot mechanic exactly; it has adapted the basic idea into something that actually makes sense on a money wheel.

Sugar Bomb Booster

The optional Sugar Bomb Booster increases the potential of the Sugar Bomb feature by enhancing the multipliers that can be awarded. It's a relatively simple addition rather than another bonus game, but it provides an extra decision before the wheel starts and gives players who want to chase the larger multiplier combinations another option.

That's useful because CandyLand isn't particularly strategic. You're ultimately betting on where a wheel is going to stop, so anything that gives you another meaningful choice before the spin adds something to the experience.

Of course, extra sugar isn't being handed out for free, and using the Booster comes at an additional cost.

Sweet Spins

Sweet Spins is the feature that most obviously connects CandyLand with the slot that inspired it. Land on Sweet Spins after backing the feature and you're awarded 10 Free Spins on a version of Sweet Bonanza displayed within the studio, complete with the familiar cluster-style gameplay and Sugar Bomb multipliers.

It's a clever way of bringing the original game into CandyLand rather than simply borrowing its name and covering the studio in sweets. After several rounds of watching the physical wheel, switching to slot-style gameplay also provides a welcome change of pace and makes Sweet Spins feel like a proper bonus rather than another wheel segment with a different payout attached.

There is something slightly ridiculous about Pragmatic Play turning Sweet Bonanza into a live game show, only to include a bonus that effectively turns it back into Sweet Bonanza again, but it works surprisingly well.

Candy Drop

Candy Drop takes CandyLand in a completely different direction, using a Plinko-style board where balls bounce through a maze of pegs and multipliers. You're presented with three Candy Balls and choose which one you want to follow before they're released into the board.

There's very little genuine skill involved in choosing the ball, but having something to select gives the feature a degree of interaction that you don't get from simply watching the wheel. Once released, your chosen ball works its way through the maze, potentially collecting multipliers as it goes and giving you a result that develops gradually rather than appearing instantly.

There's also a much bigger target hidden within the feature. If your selected Candy Ball manages to hit all four Jackpot Boxes during its journey, Candy Drop awards its 1,000x maximum prize.

Of the bonuses, Candy Drop probably does the best job of creating that traditional game-show feeling where you can physically watch the outcome unfolding. Of course, choosing one ball and then watching another have the journey of its life can be mildly irritating.

Not that I'm bitter.

Bubble Surprise

Bubble Surprise is the quickest and simplest of CandyLand's three main bonus games. It can award direct multiplier prizes of 5x, 10x or 25x, but there's also the possibility of progressing into either Candy Drop or Sweet Spins.

That second possibility makes the feature considerably more interesting than simply revealing a fixed multiplier. You're never entirely sure whether Bubble Surprise is going to provide an immediate prize or open the door to one of the larger bonuses, giving it a useful role between the main wheel and CandyLand's more substantial features.

It doesn't have the same depth as Candy Drop or Sweet Spins, but it doesn't really need it. Sometimes you get the sweets; sometimes you get shown the door to the entire sweet shop.

Sweet Bonanza CandyLand gets the balance between simplicity and variety largely right.

At heart, this is still a money wheel. You place your bets, the presenter spins it and you wait to see where it stops, so there's no complicated strategy hiding underneath the giant lollipops. That simplicity makes the game extremely accessible, but Pragmatic Play has done a good job of making the moments surrounding the wheel considerably more interesting.

The three bonus bets provide something more substantial to chase, while the Sugar Bombs can completely change the importance of a seemingly ordinary round. Landing one is useful enough, but once a multiplier is already active, watching the respin creep towards another Sugar Bomb creates considerably more tension.

I also like that the three main bonuses don't simply provide different animations before eventually producing the same type of result. Sweet Spins plays like a slot, Candy Drop uses a Plinko-style board and Bubble Surprise can either provide an immediate multiplier or send you into another feature. That variety becomes increasingly important the longer you play.

The weakness is that ordinary rounds can feel rather ordinary once you've experienced the bonuses. A succession of basic number results soon leaves you waiting for something more interesting to happen, and there's only so much excitement anyone can extract from watching a giant wheel repeatedly land on 1 or 2.

The bonus package is comfortably the strongest part of CandyLand.

Sweet Spins, Candy Drop and Bubble Surprise feel genuinely different rather than being three slightly altered routes to the same multiplier. Candy Drop is probably my favourite because choosing a ball provides at least a little involvement and watching it bounce through the board creates natural anticipation, particularly when the Jackpot Boxes start getting involved.

Sweet Spins is arguably the cleverest feature conceptually. Bringing the original Sweet Bonanza gameplay into the live studio makes perfect sense and helps CandyLand feel like a genuine extension of the slot rather than an unrelated money wheel borrowing a successful name. Bubble Surprise isn't quite as substantial, but the possibility of progressing into another bonus gives it a useful second layer.

I'd actually argue that Sugar Bombs are every bit as important as the headline bonus games. They give the regular wheel something of its own and mean an apparently straightforward round can suddenly develop into something considerably more valuable, particularly when consecutive Sugar Bomb multipliers begin interacting.

There still isn't much meaningful player control and most of your decisions ultimately amount to choosing which random event you'd like to back, but that's fairly typical of this style of game. For a live money wheel, Pragmatic Play has packed an impressive amount into CandyLand without making it unnecessarily difficult to understand.

Visuals & Presentation

CandyLand looks completely ridiculous, and that's one of its biggest strengths.

The studio feels as though Pragmatic Play physically climbed inside the Sweet Bonanza slot and started broadcasting from there. The huge wheel sits among oversized sweets, bright pink and purple surroundings, animated backgrounds and changing lighting, with practically every available surface used to reinforce the theme.

What impresses me most is how well the physical and virtual elements work together. The real wheel gives the main game the feel of a genuine live casino product, while the digital environments allow Candy Drop, Sweet Spins and Bubble Surprise to do things that would be difficult or impossible within a completely physical studio. The transitions into these features are smooth enough that the bonuses feel like part of the show rather than separate games being loaded on top of it.

The presenter-led format also suits CandyLand particularly well. Individual presenters obviously vary between shifts, so it wouldn't be fair to judge any one host as part of the permanent game rating, but having somebody controlling the wheel and interacting with the studio helps maintain the game-show atmosphere between spins.

There is inevitably some downtime while bets are taken, closed and settled, and anyone who already dislikes Sweet Bonanza's sugary aesthetic isn't going to find much relief here. CandyLand won't gently persuade you to embrace the theme; it'll beat you over the head with a giant lollipop.

For everyone else, this is an extremely polished production that knows exactly what it's supposed to be.

Originality

CandyLand obviously isn't starting from a completely blank piece of paper.

Money-wheel casino games were around long before Pragmatic Play covered one in sweets, while Sweet Bonanza itself was already an established slot when CandyLand appeared in 2021. The basic ingredients therefore aren't particularly original on their own, but there's more creativity here than simply combining the two and hoping the brand does the rest.

The Sugar Bomb mechanic fits naturally with the wheel, Candy Drop introduces a completely different style of gameplay and Sweet Spins cleverly reconnects the game show with the slot that inspired it. Bubble Surprise then adds another route through the feature structure rather than simply becoming another fixed bonus.

That combination gives CandyLand its own identity. There have been plenty of casino games built around successful existing brands where the connection amounts to little more than using the same logo and artwork, whereas this feels properly designed around the Sweet Bonanza universe.

It doesn't reinvent the wheel. It just dips it in sugar, attaches a Plinko board and hopes nobody develops a cavity.

Final Summary

Sweet Bonanza CandyLand is at its best when the main wheel stops being just a wheel.

The regular number bets keep the game accessible, but it's the Sugar Bombs and three main bonus games that give CandyLand its personality. Candy Drop is particularly enjoyable because you can watch the result develop as your selected ball works its way through the board, while Sweet Spins makes excellent use of the original Sweet Bonanza connection. Bubble Surprise is simpler, but the possibility of progressing into one of the larger bonuses means there's still something worth watching for.

Sugar Bombs are probably the unsung hero of the game. Without them, repeated spins of the main wheel could become repetitive fairly quickly, whereas adding a random multiplier and sending the wheel around again immediately creates another level of anticipation. The possibility of chaining Sugar Bombs together makes those respins considerably more interesting when you've already got a useful multiplier in play.

Presentation is another major strength. CandyLand looks completely over the top, but importantly it knows it does. Pragmatic Play hasn't simply scattered a few sweets around a conventional live casino studio; the wheel, lighting, animations and virtual bonus environments have all been designed around the Sweet Bonanza identity, making the whole thing feel like one coherent game show.

The biggest limitation is inherent to the format. There isn't much genuine decision-making once your bets have been placed, and a run of ordinary number results can make you acutely aware that you're essentially watching somebody repeatedly spin a very large wheel. The bonus games do a good job of breaking that repetition, but you'll inevitably spend some rounds waiting for the interesting stuff to arrive.

RTP is also something I'd check within the game itself rather than treating CandyLand as though it has one universal return. The theoretical return can vary according to the wager and game configuration, meaning the headline RTP doesn't necessarily represent every available betting option.

As a conversion of a successful slot into a live casino game, though, CandyLand gets far more right than wrong. It retains the recognisable Sweet Bonanza identity while introducing enough different mechanics to justify being its own game, and the combination of the physical wheel, Sugar Bombs and varied bonus games gives it considerably more longevity than a straightforward branded reskin.

It's bright, slightly bonkers and contains enough sugar to concern a dentist, but underneath all the sweets is a very well put together casino game show.

Overall Rating: 8.5/10.
