About XXXtreme Lightning Roulette

XXXtreme Lightning Roulette is a live roulette game from Evolution, released in 2022 as a more volatile version of the hugely successful Lightning Roulette. It retains the familiar single-zero European Roulette wheel but takes the original game's random multiplier mechanic considerably further with Chain Lightning, Double Strikes and multipliers reaching 2,000x.

The basic game hasn't changed. You're still betting on where a ball will land on a physical roulette wheel containing numbers 0–36, with the usual selection of Straight Up, Split, Street, Corner, Line and outside bets available.

Once betting closes, however, things become considerably less traditional.

Between one and five Lightning Numbers are initially selected and assigned random multipliers between 50x and 500x. Chain Lightning can then strike additional positions, potentially increasing the total number of enhanced spots to 10, before Double Strikes can hit existing Lightning Numbers again and send their multipliers as high as 2,000x.

It's essentially Lightning Roulette after somebody at Evolution looked at the original and decided there wasn't enough lightning.

The important thing to understand is that these enormous multipliers only apply to Straight Up bets on the selected numbers. The other traditional roulette bets remain available, but they don't suddenly become worth 2,000x because a bolt of red lightning has landed nearby.

XXXtreme Lightning Roulette therefore gives you two fairly different ways of approaching the same wheel. You can largely ignore the fireworks and play conventional roulette, or concentrate on individual numbers and accept considerably greater volatility in exchange for access to those huge multiplier payouts.

How to Play

European Roulette

At its core, XXXtreme Lightning Roulette is still European Roulette.

The physical wheel contains 37 pockets numbered 0–36, including a single green zero. Once you've placed your bets and the betting period closes, the ball is spun around the wheel before eventually settling into one of those pockets.

All the familiar roulette wagers are available, including Straight Up, Split, Street, Corner and Line bets alongside Red/Black, Odd/Even, High/Low, Dozens and Columns.

That's one of the game's strengths because despite everything flashing across the screen, the underlying rules remain extremely familiar. If you've played European Roulette before, there's very little new to learn about the actual betting.

The additional complexity arrives after you've placed those bets.

And then the weather takes a fairly dramatic turn.

Betting Options

You can make the usual range of roulette bets, but Straight Up numbers are where the XXXtreme mechanics become relevant.

Traditional multi-number and outside wagers retain their normal roulette payouts. Straight Up bets work differently because their regular payout is reduced to help fund the much larger Lightning multipliers available when an enhanced number wins.

That trade-off is important.

You aren't simply playing standard 35:1 roulette with the possibility of occasionally receiving a free 2,000x multiplier on top. The payout structure has been adjusted specifically to accommodate those larger wins.

If you prefer conventional roulette betting across several numbers, sectors or outside positions, most of the XXXtreme mechanics become largely cosmetic. If you're chasing individual numbers, however, practically the entire experience revolves around what happens during the Lightning phases.

Features

Lightning Numbers

Once betting closes, between one and five Lightning Numbers are randomly selected and struck by yellow lightning.

Each receives a random multiplier between 50x and 500x, giving Straight Up bets on those positions access to considerably larger payouts if the ball subsequently lands there.

The feature works because the multipliers are revealed before the result. If you've backed 17 and suddenly see it sitting there at 500x, the roulette spin immediately becomes considerably more interesting.

It's the same basic mechanic that made the original Lightning Roulette so successful, but in XXXtreme Lightning Roulette this is really only the beginning of the process.

The first lightning strike is essentially Evolution checking whether you're paying attention.

Chain Lightning

After the initial Lightning Numbers have been selected, Chain Lightning can spread across the betting grid and add additional enhanced numbers.

As many as nine additional Chain Lightning Numbers can potentially appear, although the combined number of standard Lightning and Chain Lightning positions can never exceed 10 during a round.

This is one of the biggest differences from ordinary Lightning Roulette.

Having as many as 10 enhanced numbers means a substantial portion of the 37-number wheel can potentially be carrying multipliers before the ball has even been spun. It also makes the Lightning phase considerably more entertaining because you don't necessarily know that the feature has finished once the initial numbers have appeared.

A strike can effectively jump elsewhere on the board and continue spreading.

For once, chain lightning is something you actively want travelling towards you.

Chain Lightning Multipliers

Numbers added through Chain Lightning receive their own multipliers and become eligible for the same enhanced Straight Up payouts if one ultimately produces the winning result.

I like the fact Evolution hasn't simply used Chain Lightning to increase the number of highlighted positions without doing anything else. The newly selected numbers become fully fledged multiplier positions, meaning a late addition can suddenly become just as interesting as one of the original Lightning Numbers.

It creates a nice sense of escalation during the pre-spin sequence. You might initially have nothing particularly useful among the first few strikes before Chain Lightning suddenly lands on one of the numbers you've actually backed.

The roulette ball hasn't even started moving and you've already had your first result to cheer for.

Double Strikes

Double Strikes are what really put the XXXtreme into XXXtreme Lightning Roulette.

After the Lightning and Chain Lightning phases, existing enhanced numbers can be struck again by red lightning, increasing their multipliers beyond the normal 500x ceiling.

A Double Strike can push a multiplier into the 600x–2,000x range, with 2,000x representing the game's maximum multiplied payout.

This is easily the most exciting part of the feature sequence because you're no longer simply hoping your number gets selected. You're hoping it gets selected, potentially enhanced again and then survives the rather more difficult task of actually catching the roulette ball.

Seeing one of your numbers sitting there at 2,000x before the wheel resolves is undoubtedly exciting.

Seeing the ball bounce off it and land next door is also exciting, although perhaps not in the way Evolution intended.

XXXtreme Lightning Roulette takes a game that already has enormous longevity and gives Straight Up betting considerably more drama.

The roulette itself doesn't need fixing. European Roulette remains easy to understand while offering one of the broadest selections of betting options in live casino, so Evolution sensibly leaves the core game alone.

The XXXtreme mechanics then give every round a second layer. Instead of simply placing your bets and waiting for the wheel, you're watching the Lightning phase to see whether any of your Straight Up numbers are selected and how valuable they become.

Chain Lightning makes that considerably more interesting than the original Lightning Roulette because the initial selection isn't necessarily the end of the story. Additional positions can appear until as many as 10 numbers are enhanced, while Double Strikes create another opportunity for an already useful number to become considerably more valuable.

My main criticism is the same one I have with most multiplier roulette games: the headline payouts can distract from the compromises being made elsewhere. Straight Up players are accepting a modified payout structure in exchange for access to those enormous multipliers, and that's something players should understand rather than assuming 2,000x has simply been added to standard roulette for free.

Mechanically, though, there's always something happening before the wheel even starts.

For a game that doesn't actually have a separate bonus round, XXXtreme Lightning Roulette has a surprisingly strong feature package.

The original Lightning Number mechanic provides the foundation, but Chain Lightning is what gives this version its own identity. Increasing the potential number of enhanced positions to 10 means the multiplier sequence can develop much further than it does in standard Lightning Roulette.

Double Strikes then provide the proper headline moment.

Seeing an existing multiplier get hit again and climb beyond 500x gives the feature genuine progression. You're not simply waiting for a random list of numbers and values to appear; there are several stages where the board can become progressively more interesting.

I also like that everything remains attached to the roulette game you're already playing. Evolution hasn't decided that landing zero should suddenly transport you into an electric-themed pick-and-click bonus for no apparent reason.

There is still only one fundamental feature system, though. Lightning Numbers, Chain Lightning and Double Strikes are different stages of the same multiplier mechanic rather than three completely independent bonus games.

It's very well developed, but I wouldn't put it alongside something like Boom City for outright feature variety.

XXXtreme Lightning Roulette is Evolution doing absolutely nothing to challenge the accusation that its Lightning games are a little dramatic.

The familiar dark studio is filled with black, red and gold, while the multiplier sequence is accompanied by lightning effects, dramatic sound and illuminated numbers appearing around the set.

Chain Lightning is particularly effective visually because the feature can continue spreading across the grid rather than ending after the initial selections. Double Strikes then switch attention to the red lightning and give the largest multipliers a suitably exaggerated reveal.

And frankly, if you're going to put 2,000x above somebody's roulette number, a little theatricality is probably justified.

The physical roulette wheel remains important because it provides a contrast with all the digital effects surrounding it. No matter how elaborate the multiplier sequence becomes, everything ultimately comes down to a real ball travelling around a real wheel.

The live presenter fits naturally into that setup, although as with our other reviews, I wouldn't rate individual hosts because they rotate. It's the overall studio, production quality and presenter-led format we're judging.

Subtle it isn't.

But nobody voluntarily puts three Xs in the name of a roulette game because they're aiming for subtle.

XXXtreme Lightning Roulette has some clever ideas, but there's no escaping the fact that it's an evolution of an Evolution game.

The original Lightning Roulette launched in 2018 and established the basic formula: European Roulette combined with randomly selected Straight Up numbers carrying large RNG multipliers.

XXXtreme Lightning Roulette takes that successful idea and turns practically everything up.

Chain Lightning increases the number of potential multiplier positions, while Double Strikes introduce a second enhancement stage and increase the maximum multiplier from 500x to 2,000x.

Those are meaningful additions rather than simply changing the studio and adding another zero to the maximum win, but the underlying concept remains very recognisable.

That's why I wouldn't score it especially highly for originality compared with something genuinely unusual like Balloon Race or Cash or Crash. Evolution hasn't created a completely new type of game here; it has created a more volatile and considerably more elaborate version of one of its existing hits.

Evolution didn't reinvent Lightning Roulette.

It plugged it into a larger socket.

Final Summary

XXXtreme Lightning Roulette takes everything that made the original Lightning Roulette popular and deliberately makes it bigger, busier and considerably more volatile.

The underlying game remains European Roulette, so you still have a physical single-zero wheel and the full collection of traditional inside and outside bets. Where things change is during the Lightning phase, particularly if you're betting Straight Up numbers.

Between one and five Lightning Numbers initially receive random multipliers from 50x to 500x. Chain Lightning can then add further enhanced positions, with as many as 10 Lightning and Chain Lightning Numbers in total during a single round.

Double Strikes provide the final escalation. Existing enhanced numbers can be struck again, increasing their multipliers beyond the normal 500x ceiling and potentially reaching 2,000x.

That multi-stage reveal is probably my favourite part of the game. You can start with none of your numbers selected, suddenly see Chain Lightning reach one of them and then watch a Double Strike turn that same position into one of the biggest potential results on the board.

Of course, there's still the small matter of the roulette ball actually landing there.

That's also where XXXtreme Lightning Roulette needs to be viewed realistically. The 2,000x headline figure sounds enormous, but the game doesn't simply hand you standard roulette payouts plus giant multipliers as a free extra. Straight Up payouts are modified to finance the multiplier mechanic, creating a much more volatile proposition for players chasing individual numbers.

Meanwhile, conventional Split, Street, Corner, Line and outside bets continue to behave much more like ordinary European Roulette and don't qualify for the Lightning multipliers.

The feature package isn't as diverse as some of the dedicated casino game shows we've reviewed, but it doesn't really need to be. Chain Lightning and Double Strikes give the multiplier sequence genuine progression, and because something can happen before every roulette result, the game rarely feels short of action.

Presentation is excellent too. The black, red and gold studio, physical wheel, Lightning effects and increasingly dramatic multiplier reveals make the game feel appropriately excessive without losing sight of the roulette underneath.

That's ultimately why XXXtreme Lightning Roulette works. It hasn't tried to replace roulette with a game show; it has simply turned the moments surrounding each spin into one.

It's Lightning Roulette after somebody ignored the weather warning and went outside carrying a very large metal pole.

Overall Rating: 8.6/10.
