JALILA MORIVIERE has developed into a seriously progressive handicap chaser and the return to a sharper 2m1½f could make her even more dangerous at Listowel. Willie Mullins' seven-year-old arrives after winning a valuable Listed handicap chase at Killarney last month, where she travelled into contention approaching the straight before staying on strongly to lead at the final fence. She had to fight for it on the run-in but kept finding to beat She's A Fine Wine, and there was plenty to like about the way she finished the race. That victory came over almost 2m5f, but there is a strong argument that today's shorter distance will suit her even better. Earlier in the season she finished second of 20 in a valuable Listed handicap over just two miles at the Punchestown Festival. She made good progress from midfield that day and came through to take second at the last, demonstrating that she has more than enough pace for a strongly-run race around this trip. She backed that up at Punchestown in June when stepped up to 2m4f. Despite making several jumping errors, including mistakes at two of the final three fences, she still managed to lead two out before eventually going down by only 1¼ lengths to Vaureal. The remainder were well beaten, with 14 lengths back to the third. Her one disappointing effort came over almost 2m7f at Galway, where she failed to see things out after travelling into the race. Rather than signalling a loss of form, that run increasingly looks a case of her stamina being stretched, as she immediately bounced back to win when returned to a shorter distance at Killarney. The handicapper has reacted with a 5lb rise to 139, but there are good reasons to believe she can cope. She was racing from just 130 when second in that big Punchestown handicap in April and has continued to progress since, while she remains relatively inexperienced over fences for a seven-year-old. There is also a nice tactical angle to today's race. Jalila Moriviere has shown enough speed to be highly competitive around two miles but also possesses the stamina to win over considerably further. A strongly-run 2m1½f on good ground could therefore prove ideal, particularly if Mark Walsh can keep her within striking distance before allowing that stamina to come into play late on. This is another valuable €45,000 handicap, so she needs another career best, but her recent form suggests that could be forthcoming. With two excellent Punchestown seconds followed by a Listed handicap victory at Killarney, and her Galway defeat easily excused, Jalila Moriviere arrives with one of the strongest profiles in the field. The 5lb rise demands more, but the drop in trip looks a positive rather than a concern and she may still be improving quickly enough to stay ahead of the handicapper.
