Book of Olympus from Apparat Gaming takes one of online slots' most familiar formats and gives the old Book mechanic a rather clever Greek makeover. Released on 26 March 2025, it uses a traditional 5x3 grid with 10 fixed paylines, high 5/5 volatility and maximum win potential of 25,000x the stake. Apparat lists a headline RTP of 96.10%, with alternative configurations going as low as 84.30%.
Zeus naturally takes centre stage, surrounded by Greek gods, eagles and suitably expensive looking ancient treasures. It is familiar territory. Greek mythology and Book slots have both been worked extremely hard by developers, so combining the two is not going to earn Apparat many points for theme alone.
Mechanically, however, there is more going on than the title initially suggests.
The Book performs the traditional Wild and Scatter duties, with three or more triggering Free Games. A random paying symbol then becomes the Golden Bonus Symbol, essentially the game's version of the classic Book Expanding Symbol. But Apparat does not stop there. Wins involving that symbol can trigger Respins, while successful sequences increase a Progressive Multiplier.
That is the important difference between Book of Olympus and something like Book of Xerxes. Instead of simply copying the familiar expanding symbol formula, Apparat has added progression to it. Successful Bonus Symbol hits can keep the sequence going and make subsequent wins increasingly valuable.
The Book might be ancient, but at least Zeus has written a couple of new chapters.
The Book of Olympus performs the familiar dual role of Wild and Scatter.
As a Wild, it substitutes for regular paying symbols across the game's 10 paylines. Land three or more Books and the Free Games feature activates.
There is nothing remotely revolutionary here. Book slots have been using precisely this arrangement for years.
It remains effective because it is so immediately understandable. The Book helps regular wins and, more importantly, it is the symbol you are waiting for to get into the main event.
When Free Games begin, one regular paying symbol is randomly selected as the Golden Bonus Symbol, which is Apparat's branded version of an Expanding Symbol.
This follows the classic Book formula, with the selected symbol capable of expanding across reels when the required number appears.
Which symbol gets chosen matters because higher paying symbols naturally create greater potential when they expand. It gives the beginning of the feature a nice little reveal before the actual action starts.
Again, we have seen expanding symbols hundreds of times.
What happens after they produce a win is much more interesting.
A qualifying win involving the Golden Bonus Symbol activates a Respin, effectively extending the sequence without simply deducting another ordinary Free Game.
Apparat specifically identifies this Respin mechanism as one of the innovations separating Book of Olympus from a conventional Book feature.
This is a genuinely good addition.
Classic expanding symbol bonuses can be quite binary. The chosen symbol either appears in useful numbers or it does not. Here, landing a successful Bonus Symbol combination can keep the action moving and create another opportunity immediately afterwards.
Zeus effectively rewards a good hit by giving you another throw of the thunderbolt.
The Respins work alongside an Increasing Multiplier, with successful Bonus Symbol sequences progressively increasing the value applied to subsequent qualifying wins. Apparat describes the mechanic as an escalating multiplier linked directly to the Respin feature.
This is where the feature starts to become substantially better than a standard Book bonus.
A Bonus Symbol win does not simply produce a payout and another spin. It can move the feature into a more valuable state, meaning a sequence of successful results becomes increasingly important.
That gives the bonus momentum.
The first expanding symbol hit is welcome. Once you have got Respins continuing and the multiplier climbing, you are suddenly hoping Zeus does not calm down any time soon.
Three or more Book symbols trigger Free Games, where the Golden Bonus Symbol, Respins and Increasing Multiplier become active.
This is effectively one interconnected feature rather than several unrelated bonuses.
That is something I particularly like about Book of Olympus. Apparat has not stuffed the game with a Hold and Spin round, Cash Collector and random jackpot simply to make the feature list look longer.
The Expanding Symbol creates the win. That win creates the Respin. The Respin sequence develops the multiplier.
Everything has a reason for being there.
Where permitted, Buy Feature provides direct access to Free Games for 117x the stake. Apparat confirms the 117x price on its official game specification.
As with our other reviews, this does not earn Book of Olympus additional rating points. It is another way of reaching the feature rather than another feature in its own right.
The ordinary game is very traditional.
Five reels, three rows, 10 paylines and a Wild/Scatter Book are not providing much entertainment that experienced slot players have not already encountered.
The bonus changes things considerably.
Expanding Bonus Symbols creating Respins means a successful hit can develop rather than simply ending immediately. Add the escalating multiplier and you have got a mechanic where consecutive success actually changes the value and intensity of the feature.
That is a meaningful improvement over the standard Book formula.
I am keeping it below 8 because most of the interesting gameplay remains locked inside Free Games. The base game is still essentially waiting for Zeus to open his Book.

This is considerably stronger than Book of Xerxes Diamond Treasures for me.
Book of Xerxes essentially combines the traditional expanding symbol formula with a separate Diamond Treasures side feature. Book of Olympus actually develops the Book mechanic itself.
The Golden Bonus Symbol, Respins and escalating multiplier form one continuous system. A successful Bonus Symbol result can extend the sequence, while continued success makes subsequent wins potentially more valuable.
There are not dozens of different features here, but that is not what we are scoring.
We are scoring how good they are.
And this is a good example of three relatively simple mechanics being considerably stronger because they interact properly.
Score: 8.3/10
Book of Olympus looks polished and appropriately grand.
Zeus provides an obvious focal point, while temples, gods, eagles, gold and stormy Greek mythology imagery give the game considerably more visual personality than Apparat's endless collection of fruit machines. Current independent descriptions consistently highlight the Greek mythology setting and clean modern presentation.
The feature also benefits visually from Golden Bonus Symbols expanding across the reels and the increasing multiplier making progress easy to follow.
There is one fairly enormous elephant sitting on Mount Olympus, though.
Greek mythology slots are everywhere.
We have seen Zeus portrayed in virtually every conceivable mood by this point, so Apparat is not breaking new artistic ground. It is very well presented familiar territory.

This needs separating into two parts.
The theme and basic structure earn virtually nothing for originality. Greek gods, Zeus, Books, Wild/Scatter symbols and expanding symbols are all exceptionally well established.
But the feature design deserves credit.
Apparat has taken the standard expanding symbol mechanic and added Respins and an escalating multiplier that reward consecutive successful Bonus Symbol hits. Apparat itself specifically marketed the Respin mechanism and increasing multiplier as the twist on the traditional Book formula when the game launched.
That is considerably more interesting than simply changing the Pharaoh on another Book slot into Zeus.
It is evolution rather than invention, but it is meaningful evolution.

Book of Olympus initially looks like another familiar Book slot, but Apparat has actually bothered to do something interesting once Zeus opens it.
The 5x3 base game is extremely conventional, and another combination of Greek mythology and expanding symbols is not going to win many originality points. It is inside Free Games where Book of Olympus separates itself.
A randomly selected Golden Bonus Symbol provides the familiar expanding symbol excitement, but successful hits can trigger Respins and develop an escalating multiplier. That creates something the traditional Book formula often lacks: momentum. One good result can lead into another with increasingly valuable consequences rather than simply paying and moving onto the next Free Spin.
It is also why I would put Book of Olympus comfortably ahead of the 7.0 we gave Book of Xerxes Diamond Treasures. Olympus has fewer headline features, but its important mechanics work together much better.
The base game could certainly do with more happening and neither the Book nor Greek mythology theme is remotely original. But Apparat has taken an old formula and improved the part that actually matters rather than simply bolting another unrelated bonus onto it.
The Book is familiar. Zeus has just made the ending considerably more exciting.
