England take on Slovakia in Gelsenkirchen on Sunday in a crucial Euro 2024 round of 16 tie. The draw has fallen kindly for Gareth Southgate’s Three Lions and they are once against the bookies’ outright favourites to win in Germany this summer. Here at betting.bet we’ll preview this key fixture, providing the latest team news, enhanced match insights and expert betting tips as well as the very best pre-match odds and offers from our partners at Coral.
Group Stage Recap
England were one of only three nations along with Spain and France that did not go behind at any point throughout their three group stage matches.
England have come in for a tirade of abuse from their own fans despite topping Group C without losing a game. England were fortunate to escape their opening match with a 1-0 win against Serbia and followed up with two pretty tame draws against Denmark (1-1) and Slovenia (0-0).
Slovakia head to Gelsenkirchen as one of the highest-ranked third place teams. Incredibly all four nations in Group E finished level on four points and Slovakia qualified in third on goal difference. Slovakia kicked off their tournament with a shock 1-0 win over Belgium before following up by losing 2-1 against Ukraine and drawing 1-1 Romania.
Ivan Schranz scored first in each of Slovakia’s first two matches and is one of only six players to have scored more than one goal in the Euro 2024 group stage.
England Team News & Southgate’s Selection Headaches
Gareth Southgate has some real important decisions to make ahead of Sunday after several England substitutes impressed off the bench against Slovenia. Midfielder Kobbie Mainoo emphatically made his case for a starting berth in the second half against Slovenia and he is now expected to be picked ahead of Conor Gallagher in the England engine room. Likewise Cole Palmer’s 20-minute cameo has potentially edged him ahead of Bukayo Saka on the England right.
Phil Foden left the England camp earlier this week to attend the birth of his third child and although the Premier League Player of the Year is set to link back up with his England teammates on Friday, there are many calls for Foden to be replaced with the naturally left-sided Anthony Gordon. Luke Shaw is rumoured to be fit enough to return at left-back but may only feature from the bench with Kieran Trippier tipped to continue in the England starting XI.
Possible England Line Up
Pickford, Walker, Stones, Guehi, Trippier, Rice, Mainoo, Bellingham, Palmer, Foden, Kane
Betting Tips
Whilst Slovakia were good value for their shock win over Belgium earlier in the tournament, England will be confident of getting their round of 16 tie wrapped up inside 90 minutes. England are priced at 4/9 to win in the match result market and this is not only an excellent single bet but also a great place to start in any bet builder on Sunday.
For all the criticism England came in for during the Euro 2024 group stage, their defence was rock-solid for the majority of the tournament. The Three Lions have conceded just once in three matches so far and could be good value at 19/20 to win to nil on Sunday.
England looked far more fluid in the second half of their goalless draw against Slovenia and if Gareth Southgate resists the temptation to name an unchanged England lineup on Sunday we could see the shackles released in Gelsenkirchen. Cole Palmer had an excellent chance to score against Slovenia and after an incredibly prolific season for Chelsea, Palmer could prove to be the pick of the bunch in Sunday’s various goalscorer markets. The Premier League’s Young Player of the Season is 9/5 to score at any time on Sunday or alternatively he can be backed at 19/4 to score first.
