Caesar's Legions from Apparat Gaming marches straight into Ancient Rome with Caesar, Roman soldiers, armour, horses and the inevitable promise of conquering the reels. Released on 15 November 2023, it uses a traditional 5x3 grid with 10 fixed paylines, carries Apparat's maximum 5/5 high volatility rating and has an official maximum exposure of 7,100x the stake. The highest RTP configuration is 96.23%, although Apparat lists configurations as low as 84.03%.
At first glance, it's a fairly conventional slot. Caesar sits at the top of the paytable, Roman themed symbols fill the reels and Veni Vidi Vici Scatters provide the route into Free Games. There's no elaborate collection system, expanding grid or collection of jackpots waiting in the wings.
The Wilds are where things become much more interesting.
S.P.Q.R. Wilds can carry 1x, 2x or 3x multipliers, and crucially, multiple Wild multipliers contributing to the same win are combined. Trigger the 12 Free Games and the mechanic becomes stronger again, with 3x Sticky Wilds remaining on the reels temporarily while their multiplier counts down.
It's a relatively small feature package compared with Apparat's more recent releases, but it's nicely focused. The base game introduces the Multiplier Wilds, then Free Games take exactly that mechanic and make it considerably more powerful.
Veni, vidi, vici? More like spin, stick and multiply.
The S.P.Q.R. Wilds are Multiplier Wilds carrying values of 1x, 2x or 3x. They substitute for regular paying symbols but not Scatters.
The interesting part is what happens when several contribute to the same winning payline. Their multipliers combine, increasing the value applied to the resulting win.
That's enough to give ordinary spins some unpredictability without cluttering the base game. A Wild isn't simply filling a missing position. Which multiplier it carries suddenly matters too.
It's also a mechanic that's extremely easy to understand. More Roman banners on a winning line generally means better news for Rome.
The game's Veni Vidi Vici symbols perform the role of Scatters, with a qualifying combination triggering 12 Free Games.
The naming is a nice thematic touch without changing how the mechanic works.
They're essentially your route from the fairly straightforward base game into the much more interesting Sticky Wild version of the multiplier mechanic.

Landing the required Veni Vidi Vici Scatters awards 12 Free Games.
Rather than throwing away everything you've learned during the base game and replacing it with an unrelated bonus, Free Games enhance the existing Wild mechanic.
That's something we've consistently rewarded in these reviews. A good Free Spins feature doesn't necessarily need five new modifiers. Sometimes taking the game's best idea and making it substantially better is enough.
And that's exactly what Apparat does here.
During Free Games, 3x Multiplier Wilds become Sticky Wilds.
When one lands, it remains in its position while its multiplier counts down over subsequent spins, moving from 3x to 2x and then 1x before eventually disappearing. Detailed independent game documentation confirms the three spin lifecycle of these Wilds.
This is easily the game's strongest mechanic.
Sticky Wilds already create anticipation because you know they'll remain available for another spin. Giving them a decreasing multiplier adds another layer because their value changes over time.
Landing another Sticky Wild while existing ones remain on the grid can also create considerably stronger combinations.
The Roman army might be disciplined, but thankfully these particular soldiers refuse to leave when they're told.
When multiple Multiplier Wilds participate in a winning payline, their values are combined to increase the resulting win. Apparat specifically highlights this interaction in its official description of the game.
This becomes particularly important during Free Games because Sticky Wilds can remain available while additional Wilds appear.
It's a good example of a simple feature creating more interesting situations naturally rather than requiring another separately branded modifier.
Where permitted, Buy Feature provides direct access to Free Games for 95x the stake. Apparat confirms the price in its official specification.
As with our other reviews, Bonus Buy receives no additional rating credit. It's another method of reaching Free Games rather than an additional feature.
Caesar's Legions is simple, but there's a good mechanic underneath that simplicity.
The 5x3, 10 payline structure is extremely conventional. Without the Multiplier Wilds, there wouldn't be much worth discussing during ordinary play.
Those Wilds make a meaningful difference.
Having 1x, 2x and 3x values attached to them means their appearance carries more significance than a conventional substitute, while combining multiple multipliers creates the possibility of individual spins developing unexpectedly.
Free Games then improve the gameplay substantially through Sticky Wilds.
It's not deep enough for an 8, particularly compared with Apparat's later games such as Total Eclipse Supreme, but it's a well designed straightforward slot.

There aren't many features here, but the important ones work together properly.
Multiplier Wilds establish the central mechanic during ordinary play. Free Games then convert 3x Wilds into Sticky versions, allowing them to remain on the grid while their multiplier gradually decreases. Multiple Wild multipliers can subsequently combine on qualifying wins.
That's a much better feature design than simply having four unrelated bonuses sitting beside one another.
I'm also keeping the historical context in mind. This is a 2023 release, considerably earlier than many of the Apparat titles we've just reviewed. It doesn't have the sheer mechanical depth of the studio's newer games, but the Sticky Multiplier Wild implementation still holds up well.

Caesar's Legions does Ancient Rome perfectly competently.
Caesar himself provides the premium symbol, with horses, helmets, laurel wreaths, coins and Roman military imagery filling out the paytable. Independent descriptions consistently identify the battlefield and Roman Empire presentation as central to the game's visual identity.
The S.P.Q.R. Wilds also fit the theme rather nicely and their multiplier values remain extremely easy to follow.
But Roman slots aren't exactly rare.
Gladiators, emperors, Roman soldiers and ancient battlefields have been used countless times before, and there's nothing visually spectacular enough here to overcome that familiarity.

The theme contributes very little to this score.
Ancient Rome is familiar slot territory, while Free Spins, Sticky Wilds and Wild Multipliers were all well established long before Caesar marched onto Apparat's reels.
The implementation earns the points.
Using 3x Sticky Wilds that subsequently count down through 2x and 1x gives the bonus a recognisable mechanic of its own. The ability for multiple Wild multipliers to combine also means these aren't simply ordinary Sticky Wilds wearing Roman uniforms.
It's not groundbreaking, but there's enough thought behind the interaction to stop Caesar's Legions feeling generic.

Caesar's Legions doesn't arrive with an army of different features, but the few soldiers it brings onto the reels are put to good use.
The ordinary 5x3 game is fairly traditional, although S.P.Q.R. Multiplier Wilds carrying values of 1x, 2x and 3x immediately give regular wins something extra. Multiple Wild multipliers can combine, while 12 Free Games upgrade the mechanic through 3x Sticky Wilds that remain in position as their multiplier counts down.
There's not enough mechanical depth to compete with Apparat's strongest later releases, and visually the Roman theme is familiar territory. What Caesar's Legions does particularly well is focus. Its best base game mechanic becomes its best bonus mechanic rather than being abandoned as soon as Free Games begin.
For a 2023 release, it has aged reasonably well. It's simple, volatile and easy to understand, with enough interaction between Sticky Wilds and multipliers to give the bonus some genuine bite.
Caesar came. Caesar saw. The Wilds stayed for another three spins.
