France begin their Euro 2024 campaign on Monday evening as they take on Austria in Dusseldorf. As they go in search of a record-equalling third European Championship win, Les Bleus are amongst the bookies’ favourites to win Euro 2024. Here at betting.bet we’ll preview this crucial Group D fixture, providing the best betting tips and latest team news and match insights as well as up to the minute match odds from our partners at Virgin Bet.
A Tricky Group
Austria and France have been drawn in one of the toughest of the six groups at Euro 2024 with Poland and the Netherlands making up the rest of the group. Poland v Netherlands will take place on Saturday evening.
Form
France looked excellent during qualification, winning seven and drawing one of their eight group matches to top Group A ahead of Euro 2024 opponents, the Netherlands. However, Didier Deschamps' side have not quite been at their best in four friendly matches in 2024. France kicked off the year by losing 2-0 against Euro 2024 hosts Germany whilst their most recent international produced an underwhelming 0-0 draw against Canada. There were a couple of wins over Chile (3-2) and Luxembourg (3-0) sandwiched in the middle but France will need to pick up their form on Monday.
Austria look rejuvenated under Ralf Ragnick and head to Germany as one of Europe’s most in-form sides. The Austrians have lost just one of their past sixteen internationals and finished just one point behind Belgium in their qualification group.
Team News
The major talking point from a French perspective is the fact that William Saliba is likely to start on the bench on Monday. Saliba was arguably the best defender in the Premier League throughout the 2023/24 season but Deschamps continues to overlook the Arsenal man in favour of Dayot Upamecano and Liverpool’s Ibrahima Konate.
There will be a couple of notable absentees from Monday’s lineups as Austria captain David Alaba and France’s Lucas Hernandez both failed to recover from their respective injuries in time to be considered for their nation’s Euro 2024 squads.
Austria v France: Head-to-Head
Austria have won just one of their past ten matches against France, a FIFA World Cup qualifier in September 2008. The last meeting between the nations saw France emerge 2-0 winners in the UEFA Nations League tie in September 2022 with Kylian Mbappe and Olivier Giroud on target for France in Paris.
Betting Tips
Only Romelu Lukaku and Cristiano Ronaldo bettered Kylian Mbappe’s tally of nine goals in qualifying and the 2022 FIFA World Cup Golden Boot winner is the red-hot favourite to win the Golden Boot at Euro 2024 this summer. Real Madrid-bound Mbappe signed off at Paris Saint-Germain with 44 goals in 48 matches in 2023/24 and has to be given real consideration in the various goalscorer markets available. Below are just some of the goal scorer markets available ahead of Monday’s match.
Kylian Mbappe to score | Odds |
---|---|
To score at any time | 4/5 |
First goalscorer | 3/1 |
Last goalscorer | 3/1 |
To score 2 or more | 4/1 |
To score a hat-trick | 16/1 |
France conceded just three goals in qualification and their defence looked as airtight as ever in their recent international double-header. Didier Deschamps’ side kept back-to-back clean sheets in matches against Luxembourg and Canada and whilst Austria represents a considerable step up in quality, we’re tipping the two-time European champions to kick off their tournament with another clean sheet. France to win to nil is generously priced at 5/4.
